Now, even though Barack Obama was voted in as the anti-war candidate, he’s pledged to move the focus from Iraq in order to send more troops to Afghanistan and escalate the “good war.” We cannot leave it up to Washington to end this war. It’s imperative that we rebuild a strong anti-war movement that takes an uncompromising stance against the occupations of Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine and US imperialism generally.

Come to a teach-in hosted by Berkeley Stop the War Coalition this Monday, March 16th to hear about the situation in Afghanistan from Sonali Kolhatkar, one of the founders of the Afghan Women’s Mission and co-author of “Bleeding Afghanistan: Washington, Warlords, and the Propaganda of Silence” and Melody Ermachild Chavez. On Saturday Israel announced a ceasefire, claiming the slaughter was over, and plans to remove it's troops before Obama officially takes office on Tuesday.

But is the war on Gaza, and the Palestinians in general, really over? And why is Israel allowed to get away with such flagrant disregard for human life and international law? Come to a teach-in this Wednesday (21st Jan) to hear some answers to these questions and to find out what we can do to fight Israeli aggression and US imperialism, it's ultimate source of support. Speakers from Berkeley Stop the War Coalition (Nick Kardahji), Students for Justice in Palestine (Allison Deger) & the Muslim Students Association.

This teach-in is part of a series of events organized by the Gaza Solidarity Coalition, in response to Israeli aggression and the mass killings of Palestinian men, women and children.

Three hospitals and a UN compound have been bombed by Israel as troops continue to advance into the densely-populated Gaza City.

Around 500 people were sheltering in the Al-Quds hospital in the city's southwestern Tal Al-Hawa district when it was bombed by Israeli jets and set ablaze on Thursday morning.

Hospital officials said the fire was sparked by a "phosphorus shell".

"We have been able to control the fire in the hospital but not in the administrative building," one hospital official said.

"We hope that the flames don't spread again to the wings of the hospital."

Two hospitals east of Gaza City were also hit by Israeli shells as Gazans fled tanks advancing into the city.

It was no immediately clear if any casualties following the raids.

UN fire 'still raging'

The Israelis also bombed a UN compound in Gaza City, setting fire to warehouses of badly-needed food and medical aid and prompting international outrage.

Around 700 Palestinians were sheltering in the UN complex at the time of the strikes which left two civilians and three staff members injured.

Adnan Abu Hasna, a spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (Unrwa), said fires were still raging hours after the attack and "tens of millions of dollars worth of aid" had been destroyed.

John Ging, the director of Unrwa operations in the Strip, also accused the Israelis of using phosphorus shells.

"They are phosphorus fires so they are extremely difficult to put out because, if you put water on, it will just generate toxic fumes and do nothing to stop the burning," he said.

Israel insists all weapons used in the conflict comply with international law.

Unrwa officials said they would evacuate the complex.

'Investigation needed'

Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister, justified shelling the UN headquarters claiming armed Palestinians within it had fired at Israeli troops first.

"It is absolutely true that we were attacked from that place … but the consequences were very sad and I apologise for it," he said.

However, Christopher Gunness, a spokesman for Unrwa, robustly denied that Palestinian fighters were among refugees sheltering there.

"At no stage during the fighting today did any Israeli official pick up the phone and tell us there were militants in our compound.

"We always take action against militants ... there were no militants in our compound and now they [the Israelis] are changing their story, saying militants were 'in the vicinity'," he said.

Gunness called for a "proper investigation" into the incident.

Louis Michel, the European Aid Commissioner, also condemned the bombing of the UN complex, branding it "unacceptable".

"I am deeply shocked and dismayed to learn of this incident ... I have made it very clear that all sides must respect international humanitarian law.

"It is unacceptable that the UN headquarters in Gaza has been struck by Israeli artillery fire," he said.

Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary general, strongly condemned the incident and demanded a full explanation from Tzipi Livni, the Israeli foreign minister, during talks held on Thursday in Tel Aviv.

Ban said Ehud Barak, the Israeli defence minister, had apologised for the attack describing it as a "grave mistake".

A Red Crescent office near Gaza City and the main mosque in the southern city of Rafah were also shelled as the Israelis pushed deeper into the Strip.

CAN Statement on Israeli Atrocities in Gaza

This statement was issued on January 7th - the death toll now stands at over 1000 dead with several thousand injured...

Statement of Solidarity with Palestine

The Israeli state continues its campaign against the people of Palestine, this time in the form of 7 days of consecutive aerial bombardment where the Israeli airforce, considered to be the most powerful in the region, has dropped hundreds of tons of bombs indiscriminately on the unarmed residents of Gaza. This assault, along with the most recent ground invasion, has led to the murder of over 500 innocent men, women and children. The focus of Israel's assault has been the destruction of the infrastructure of Gaza, including farms, universities, mosques, hospitals, orphanages, houses and apartments with a complete disregard for human life. The nature of these targets is a clear indication of the criminal intentions that motivate this military aggression. All of this has been done in the name of fighting "terrorism" and rooting out the democratically elected Palestinian government in Gaza led by Hamas. We call on the Palestinian resistance to remain strong and endure this barbaric assault by continuing to resist and stand strong in the face of Israeli terrorism. This aggression by Israel's military is not just aimed at the Palestinians, but is a message to all the oppressed and colonized. Any type of defiance will be met with murder.

The Campus Antiwar Network calls on all its chapters and members to make their voices heard in opposition to the onslaught on Gaza by joining or organizing protests that call for an immediate end to the Israeli land, air and sea assault on Gaza. We also demand an immediate end to the siege that has been strictly enforced for 16 months and has driven people to the brink of starvation. Finally, we demand that the United States end all funding to the state of Israel that helps to make the oppression of the Palestinian people possible.

In Solidarity,

The Campus Antiwar Network

Video of Teach-in On Racism and Islamophobia

For those who couldn't make it last Tuesday...

It's time to get racist John Moghtader kicked off the ASUC

Racist ASUC senator John Moghtader is one of the people responsible for attacking three Palestinian students a few weeks back. Although the mainstream media and major politicians keep
touting progress and the success of Bush's surge, conditions in the
country remain dreadful as people live without basic necessities and
Iraqis die on a daily basis, adding to the more than a million Iraqis
killed in the last five years. A poll conducted by the British
Ministry of Defense found that 82% of Iraqis are "strongly opposed" to
the occupation, and "less than 1% of the population believes coalition
forces are responsible for any improvement in security." In addition,
a Zogby International/Le Moyne College poll taken in February 2006 of
troops stationed in Iraq, 72% said the US should withdrawal in 12
months. Journalists finally broke through and exposed the massacre. The government tried to silence this by sending one Army Lieutenant to jail. Over a period of a year Antiwar soldiers back in the United States were forming the basic organization needed to hit back to expose the truth. In 1971 the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) converged at a Hotel in Detroit Michigan to carry out the Winter Soldier Hearings meant to expose the criminal nature of the U.S. war policy.

Joe Bangert one of those who testified pointed out in the documentary film about Soldiers Resistance during the Vietnam war "Sir, No Sir" that they intended the hearings to go "after the notion that the policies of the U.S. military created things like Mai Lai… it was a policy, both written and unwritten…" that couldn't be explained or written off as it was for a long time as an "isolated instance of abhorrent behavior" by individual soldiers.

Iraq and Afghanistan's Winter Soldier Investigation

It is in this same context that the Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) veterans both from Iraq and Afghanistan will be testifying in the Winter Soldier Investigations being held in Washington, D.C., from March 13—16. This investigation will expose and make the case that orders from the White House for the U.S. Military to carry out an occupation creates the circumstances in which war crimes like those in Fallujah, Abu Ghraib and Haditha are the inevitable outcome.

Our commitment to the Veterans' Antiwar Movement

As part of CAN's ongoing commitment to strengthening the veterans' antiwar movement, chapters are strongly encouraged to organize events that will amplify the voices of the Winter Soldier Investigation. Assuming you don't have Spring Break during the March 13-16th event, a live-feed of the events will be available through www.ivaw.org and could be presented to a public audience on your campus. Chapters should also think about inviting IVAW members to share their testimony in person on campus as a "Report Back" from the proceedings. Organizing such meetings can project CAN and IVAW on your campus and equip students with the knowledge of the reality of the occupation. The more people who know about the Winter Soldier proceedings, the more likely GIs in Iraq and Afghanistan will be confident to stand up to their illegal orders.

Fundraising events

Chapters have organized joint fundraising events with IVAW through RIT, Rutgers University. Both chapters threw house parties and one split the profit with the IVAW chapter, the other chapter gave all the fundraising monies to the local IVAW chapter at both parties CAN worked with IVAW to bring out soldiers they'd met through our events and activity.

Viewing the original Winter Soldier Documentary

Chapters can widely publicize Winter Soldier by doing campus viewings of the original documentary. http://www.wintersoldierfilm.com Chapters can publicize the viewing and or "Report Back" at this movie showing. The University of Illinois at Chicago can be contacted for more information on viewing the film UIC@campusantiwar.net

Live Feed and Simulcast viewings

Chapter not conflicting with Spring break close downs should view the Live Feed or Simulcast through the web. Reserve a room that is accessible to many people with a large enough screen with a projector that has a connection to the internet or TV broadcast. Be sure to open up these viewings by explaining the significance of Winter Soldier and work with IVAW to get soldiers they know from the community and on campus to come. There are a number of ways to watch the proceedings at Winter Soldier. Visit http://ivaw.org/wintersoldier/support

Winter Soldier Report Back Panel

A panel can include a veteran willing to share what he/she testified and a CAN member to speak about the current state of Iraq. Taking what we learned from the Dahr Jamail conference call: the state of the Iraqi refugee crisis, the failure of the troop surge and the brutal conditions of the occupation can help give context to people who come. We should aim this event at drawing out an audience of veterans on/off campus as well as the students that we are meeting. It's even possible to view some of the Winter Soldier hearing which will be made available on the IVAW website in the same event. Building it: circulate a Press Release, regular tabling in high traffic areas like a student union or café as well as leafleting on the campus walkways, dorm storming (walking through the dorms and handing out leaflets) and outreach to other groups.

Spring Conference

If regions can do this, providing they have the resources can collaborate with IVAW to hold a special Winter Soldier investigation panels and viewings at their spring conference. CAN is currently working with many IVAW chapters across the country and should utilize the relationship we have with them. It strengthens IVAW and strengthens CAN when we collaborate.

Please Report on your chapter's plans and how they went CANdiscussion@googlegroups.com

Organizational advice and contact information for nearby IVAW chapters can be obtained through CAN's coordinating committee: contact Ken for chapter development and Tiffany for IVAW coordination national@campusantiwar.net

Campus Antiwar Network presents Phil Aliff of Iraq Veterans Against the War

US Troops Say: "We Want Out"
Campus Antiwar Network presents Phil Aliff of Iraq Veterans Against the War

According to a Zogby International/Le Moyne College poll taken in February 2006 of troops stationed in Iraq, 72% said the US should withdrawal in 12 months. Of that, 29% thought the US should leave immediately. One year after this poll was taken, a campaign called the Appeal for Redress got signatures of almost 2,000 active duty Iraq soldiers stating that, "As a patriotic American proud to serve the nation in uniform, I respectfully urge my political leaders in Congress to support the prompt withdrawal of all American military forces and bases from Iraq"

It has been two years since the Zogby poll and troop levels in Iraq have only gone up. This has meant that already exhausted troops have had to go on their, third… fourth… sometimes fifth tours of duty. On top of that returning soldiers do not have the health care they need and deserve. Veterans hospitals are in a state of utter decay.

SFSU Students Against War, (a chapter of the national Campus Antiwar Network) is proud to present Phil Aliff of Iraq Veterans Against the War. He is an Iraq war veteran who served in 2005 and 2006 near Fallujah and Baghgad, recently discharged from the 10th Mountain Division of the Army. People often cite the fact that Iraq is no longer the #1 concern in voters' minds as an effect of this 'success' -- ignoring, of course, both that Iraq is still incredibly important to most people and that the only reason it's no longer #1 is that the economy is falling to shambles around us. That said, this article is a good riposte to that, published by a scholar at Boston U. who, unlike the vast majority of people who pushed the war, actually lost a son in the war.

For contrast, this is an example of the kind of crap circulating about the surge from the pro-war crowd, aptly named 'Mission Accomplished.'

Ron Paul and the antiwar movement don't mix

The Ron Paul campaign has come up a couple times in meetings, so I wanted to pass this article along, which expands the arguments I was making about why the antiwar movement shouldn't embrace his campaign. As we move deeper into election season this Spring, it'll be interesting to see if Paul continues to attract to support on campus, and we should be prepared to argue with genuine antiwar folks that are attracted to his campaign that it's not a good way to build the antiwar movement. I imagine most people on campus who are looking to Paul as antiwar solution aren't familiar with his really noxious positions on a wide range of issues, and we should take it upon ourselves to argue with folks that getting involved in BSTW is a far better way to build the antiwar movement.
<img width='1' height='1' Berkeley students and faculty members organized a teach-in about Israel's war on Lebanon. Attended by hundreds of students, faculty, and community members, the event was an opportunity to challenge assumptions and consensuses. The teach-in on December 6 is a follow-up event to last year's, stemming from our concern about the direction of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East and increasing campaigns against critics on U.S. campuses.

The teach-in focuses on the continuing occupations of Iraq and Palestine, on the threats of American wars against Syria and Iran, and on the intimidation crusades of lobbies and pressure groups against members of the academic community who have voiced criticism. We think these issues are linked and need to be publicly debated. Apparently, thousands of wounded soldiers who served in Iraq are being asked to return part of their enlistment bonuses -- because their injuries prevented them from completing their tours. From Pittsburgh's KDKA:

One of them is Jordan Fox, a young soldier from the South Hills.

He finds solace in the hundreds of boxes he loads onto a truck in Carnegie. In each box is a care package that will be sent to a man or woman serving in Iraq. It was in his name Operation Pittsburgh Pride was started.

Fox was seriously injured when a roadside bomb blew up his vehicle. He was knocked unconscious. His back was injured and lost all vision in his right eye.

A few months later Fox was sent home. His injuries prohibited him from fulfilling three months of his commitment. A few days ago, he received a letter from the military demanding nearly $3,000 of his signing bonus back.

"I tried to do my best and serve my country. I was unfortunately hurt in the process. Now they're telling me they want their money back," he explained.

Perversely, President Bush phoned Fox's mother to ask after Fox in May. Now his administration is taking money out of the pockets of wounded veterans like him.

Back in October, Rep. Jason Altmire (D-PA) introduced a bill, the Veterans Guaranteed Bonus Act, that would require the Pentagon to pay bonuses to wounded vets in full within 30 days after discharge for combat-related wounds. Back then, the Pentagon's flack vaguely assured The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, "We are going to give our wounded warriors and their families what they need to recover and return to duty or private life." But apparently the policy has yet to change. It seems that the enlistment contract that at least some troops sign (whether it's service-specific is unclear) allows for withholding some of the signing bonus if a tour isn't completed.

Thanks to TPM Reader DB

In case anyone forgot...

Please please PLEASE do not sign anything without reading through it first! One would think this is obvious, but...

--------------------------------------------------
Possible *Ballot Petition* Fraud in California: Electoral Vote Initiative
by Vikingkingq, Wed Nov 14, 2007

First, I should explain that I'm a graduate student at the University of California Santa Barbara.

Today I witnessed what I think is an incidence of ballot petition fraud relating to the electoral vote apportionment initiative - the proposal to apportion California's electoral votes by congressional district, unilaterally giving 19 of California's electoral votes to the Republicans in 2008.

Outside the UCEN (student center plus bookstore plus food court) at UC Santa Barbara, there were a number of people with cardboard clipboards soliciting people to sign ballot petitions for a proposal to spend $1 billion on cancer hospitals for kids. If you agree to sign, they tell you "you need to sign 4 times." What they do not tell you is that the three pages after the ballot initiative on cancer hospitals are different ballot initiatives: the second proposes to abolish eminent domain, the third proposals to abolish rent control, and the fourth is the proposal to apportion California's electoral votes by district (the so-called Dirty Tricks Initiative).

I should note that the clipboard is arranged such that a rubber band holding the petitions to the cardboard is positioned on the top of the page, across the actual ballot language in question - thus, partially hiding the text of the ballot initiatives on pages 2-4 unless you actually stop and pull down the top of the page.

I agreed to sign the cancer initiative, but the comment about signing four times raised a red flag, because I'm familiar with the structure of ballot petitions, so I paused before signing and looked at the other initiatives. However, I'm absolutely sure that most of the people signing, young college students on a rush to get their lunches and off to class, did not take this step.

What they are doing is getting people to sign for ballot initiatives without their knowledge or informed consent, using young peoples' desire to do a good thing and their lack of familiarity with the legal paperwork of initiative petitions. If this is not illegal it is certainly deeply unethical. The moment I realized what was going on, I told the petitioners that they shouldn't be telling people to sign for ballot initiatives they're not aware of. Immediately after, I called the school newspaper, the Daily Nexus, the Courage Campaign, the Santa Barbara Democratic Central Committee, and the California Democratic Party.

-----------------------------------------------------------

This is the Dirty Tricks Initiative I've been ranting about for a while. Sure enough, it's come back to life, and college students are prime targets for signature gathering because either they don't care or they don't take the time to try. These people are in Berkeley--it's been reported that they're doing the same thing here. More info

Protesting the war!

Here's a link to the Daily Cal article about the protest from Saturday. It criticizes the week as a manipulation (desecration?) of the 1st Amendment because it uses the Bill of Rights to justify the establishment of a binary, alienating, hate-fueled environment. Apparently, Horowitz has cited the article as a statement of support from UC Berkeley for his expression of free speech. I have heard multiple groups on campus call for a more inflammatory condemnation by the Daily Cal.

I imagine that my reaction is quite similar to all of yours. Quinio writes that "the real danger comes not from single words, but from those who find single words to be frightening." I find it interesting that he can criticize the Daily Cal for being overly sensitive to the term "Islamo-Fascism" while he capitalizes on the fear which such a term can instill. Peter Wilby (via The Guardian) put it nicely when he wrote, "I wish the press would debate a little more vigorously the views...of those who flirt with the boundaries of racism and not simply pillory those who question them."

It is important to remember that the "Islamo-Fascism Awareness" movement will not die after this week. Just a few weeks ago, Senator Rick Santorum urged President B-sh to depict the war in Iraq as a battle against Islamo-Fascism in an effort to rouse dwindling public support (because this provides "a clear message and a clear understanding of what we are up against") In the coming months we should watch for this new shift in rhetoric.

If anyone is interested, NRCAT has published a Statement Against Torture which everyone is welcome and encouraged to endorse. Personally, I do not encourage anyone to endorse David Horowitz' Petition (though it is quite an interesting read), which has been likened to the Great Loyalty Oath from Catch-22.

Tomorrow, during the BCR event at noon on Sproul, there will be protesters reading statements, waving signs, etc. If anyone would like to read a statement or participate, please come! Meet up a little before noon on Upper Sproul. I hope to see you all there! Wear green!

Announcements! Rep. Pete Stark (D- CA) had the following comments to make:

First of all, I'm just amazed they can't figure out, the Republicans are worried we can't pay for insuring an additional 10 million children. They sure don't care about finding $200 billion to fight the illegal war in Iraq. Where ya gonna get that money? You going to tell us lies like you're telling us today? Is that how you're going to fund the war? You don't have money to fund the war or children. But you're going to spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the President's amusement. This bill would provide healthcare for 10 million children and unlike the President's own kids, these children can't see a doctor or receive necessary care. [...]

But President Bush's statements about children's health shouldn't be taken any more seriously than his lies about the war in Iraq. The truth is that Bush just likes to blow things up. In Iraq, in the United States and in Congress.

Yay for Stark's "colorful way of expressing himself" !!!! Outraged (and hypocritical) Republicans demand an apology for this flagrant attack in George II. Stark has kind of refused. It's interesting, especially since Republicans have always been so warm and fuzzy. Here's a photo of Rep. Steve King (R- IA) expressing his opinion of the bill. JC Watts later called Stark a "small person with a withered soul."

Does the attention Stark has received indicate anything? DISTRACTION, GOoPer style? And who's feeding into it? Our friend Pelosi, among others. No need to draw attention to more worthy issues (funding the war with $200 billion per year? reinstituting habeus corpus? Blackwater? providing health care for 10 million kids?)...

Occupation and resistance in Iraq

This is pretty amazing: a six-minute 'video op-ed' posted on the New York Times website about the Iraqi resistance. It includes interviews and statistics that show that it is the American occupation itself, rather than sectarian strife or 'terrorism,' which is causing the vast majority of the obscene violence in Iraq. Ordinary Iraqis are understandably incensed by the presence of the American military, and it is this fact which is causing them to fight--which accounts for most of the attacks in the country (74% of all violent acts in Iraq are aimed at the American military, as opposed to other Iraqis, according to the US Department of Defense). Definitely worth watching.
<img width='1' height='1' anti-Muslim posters were plastered all over campus, saying “Hate Muslims? So do we!!!” This poster claimed to be in the name of the conservative students on campus, but in fact, it seems that some misguided anti-war activists issued the posters as “satire.” The Campus Antiwar Network condemns this action in the strongest possible terms. We do not believe the posters were an “anti-war action.” Instead, they played into the racist atmosphere that Muslim and Arab students and people in general suffer today.

No doubt, the racist right-wing and the police will use these events to try to clamp down on genuine anti-war and anti-racist actions at George Washington as well as on other campuses across the country. We oppose all attacks on free speech on the part of the university and police authorities.

We call on all anti-war activists and anti-racist people to condemn the actions that took place at George Washington University. Despite this terrible action, we continue to believe that the organizers of the so-called “Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week” are themselves stoking the racist hysteria against Muslims and Arabs.

CAN will continue to organize in solidarity with Arab and Muslim people against the Islamophobia that George Bush is using to justify his war in Iraq. We believe that the continued occupation of Iraq is a crime against humanity and we demand that we bring all the troops home now.

passed by CAN chapters at the following schools
Kent State University
University of Maryland--College Park
San Francisco State University
Northeastern Illinois University
Rochester Institute of Technology
University of California--Berkeley
City College San Francisco
University of Wisconsin--Madison
University of Illinois--Chicago
University of Illinois--Champaign-Urbana
City College New York

Workshop on Vietnam

Perhaps over the next week anyone who finds information contributing to the Jeffs' discussion on Vietnam could post it for all to see and learn!

Simply add a comment to this message to contribute to the conversation.

October 27th -- protest the war in San Francisco

The October 27th protest against the war in Iraq is just around the corner. We're hoping for a good showing of people from UC Berkeley. The Campus Antiwar Network is sponsoring a student contingent and everyone is more than welcome to join us.

Protesting the war has in recent years been considered a little passe (partly because people feel they don't do anything and partly because people feel that they are a kind of ritualized political theater of the left). But it has always seemed to me that this conclusion was based on people's raised expectations about protesting the war Iraq, namely, that protests were ALL that it would take to stop the war.

Protests have never been sufficient to stop any war. In the 1960s, there were of course substantial demonstrations, but a) they were happening all over the country, and not just in a few places every 6 months and b) they were only part of the resistance to the war time effort (which included, domestically, draft-dodging, counter-recruitment, sit-ins, etc. and internationally, importantly included the successful military tactics of the Vietnamese NLF).

But protests are necessary. They not only give people a chance to see what the anti-war movement looks like, they get to see what it is that the antiwar movement wants. We get an opportunity to meet and talk to other activists who have their own experiences of organizing successes and failures and we get to learn from them. And perhaps most importantly, they can definitely be a boost for morale in some trying times.

Stand Up! Just something to keep an eye on. I guess we'll know in a week or two whether they're still going to pursue the initiative without Hiltachk's sponsorship, but if they do it's something we should all be aware of.

I don't know if any of you have noted the Iran buildup over the last few months (here's a little recap). Last week the Senate (76-22) took steps to support General Petraeus in condemning Iranian leadership as a "terrorist organization" through passing the Kyl-Lieberman motion. I particularly liked the part where it states "it should be the policy of the United States to combat, contain, and roll back the violent activities and destabilizing influence of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, its foreign facilitators such as Lebanese Hezbollah, and its indigenous Iraqi proxies." (hahaha...Iran's parliament took a similar step against the CIA and US Army.)

Meanwhile, what's going on in Afghanistan? If Hamid Karzai has lost hope in his ability to maintain peace, what will it take for us to recognise our own failures? I was surprised I read that "Several former members of the Taliban government serve in Parliament, and a few more hold positions in provincial governments. Prominent members of Mr. Hekmatyar’s party have been given government positions and have taken part in parliamentary elections" (NYT, 9/29/07). People repeatedly write, and it's interesting to consider, How close is Afghanistan to a 9/10/01 state?

Well, maybe that's all nonsense...feel free to delete/complain/comment/add to it.

Off to jeer Hilary...See you all soon!

-Palmer

Bombing for peace is like fucking for virginity.
